KAKAO Books

A web app where families write a book together for someone they love – told in their own voice. Launched for Father's Day, now a platform for several occasions: Father's Day, Día de Muertos, birthdays. Customer journey, branding, UX and system architecture from one hand.

Initial Situation / Problem

Family memories in the Hispanic diaspora have no home. Services like Storyworth are monolingual, run over email and assume the honoree writes the book themselves. KAKAO Books – a joint venture with Gaby Negron (Houston) – turns that around: the family writes for someone. Children, partners, grandchildren – each tells their own story, in their own voice, and together they make one book.

The first occasion was Father's Day, 21 June 2026 – with less than three weeks from go to launch. But it was clear from the start that a book for dad was only the beginning. The same gesture – many voices, one book – fits a birthday, the remembrance of someone who has passed, Mother's Day or Christmas. So the question wasn't only "How do we build a product in three weeks?" but "How do we build it so a second and third occasion can be added tomorrow without starting over?"

My Role / Contribution

Head of Design & Tech – concept and delivery of the entire product, from narrative dramaturgy to the printed book:

  • Customer journey: story questions in chapters (bilingual ES/EN); every answer instantly appears as a designed book page – after each story you see what's taking shape
  • Voice-first UX: speak instead of type. You talk, the app writes along, and an AI gently polishes the text into book prose – without losing your voice
  • Brand & editorial design: the Kakao Edition system (warm paper, navy, ochre), its own typography for screen and print, a square book format
  • Platform architecture: one shared core for every occasion – writing, collaboration, payment, print – with interchangeable occasion packs on top
  • Launch discipline: only what's been checked gets sold – the printed book goes on sale only once the proof copy is approved

Solution / Result

One platform, one engine – many occasions.

One core, many occasions

Think of KAKAO Books as a small publishing house: one printing press, many book series. The core – writing together, telling stories by voice, paying, printing, shipping – is the same for every occasion. What changes lives in an occasion pack: the questions, the chapters, the tone, the design, the emails, the deadline.

  • Father's Day (Padre) – the first book, launched June 2026
  • Día de Muertos – a book as an ofrenda: everyone brings their memory of a loved one to the table, just as no one sets an altar alone
  • Birthday (Cumpleaños) – all year round, with its own date per book and a timely close before the celebration

Since October 2026 all three are live. A new occasion today is mostly editorial and design work – new questions, new tone, new imagery – not a technical rebuild.

KAKAO Padre — print preview: the book “Papá!” as designed pages with export validation

No hurdle before the first sentence

  • No account, no login before the first story – the book simply grows in the browser
  • The account is only created at purchase. The interface never says "your account", always your book
  • Pay right in the app, by card or Google Pay

KAKAO checkout — embedded payment: card, Google Pay, Pay $29

Telling stories together, from anywhere

  • Up to five co-authors, invited by link – each writes on their own device
  • The book doesn't wait for the host to pay before the others can start

From screen to book

  • The stories automatically become a print-ready book, with a preview to approve before printing
  • A reading link for the family, easy to share on WhatsApp
  • Printing through several partner printers – if one fails, the next takes over

Impact / Added Value

  • From product to platform: launched as a Father's Day book, now three occasions live – Father's Day, Día de Muertos, birthdays – on the same foundation
  • Scalable through design, not rebuilds: every further occasion (Mother's Day, grandparents, Christmas) is a new pack of questions, tone and design – the core stays
  • Hard deadlines met: soft launch on 11 June, full launch on Father's Day 2026; Muertos and birthdays live ahead of 1 November
  • One person, four disciplines: customer journey, brand design, UX and system architecture from one hand – what the family sees in the editor is exactly what gets printed
  • Culture as product logic: the ofrenda explains "many voices, one book" better than any tutorial – the occasion isn't decoration, it's dramaturgy
  • A category, not a copy: bilingual, voice-led, written together – not a Hispanic Storyworth, but a narrative form of its own for the diaspora
